It's been a terrible and awkward week this week here in Xinjiang, but things are finally calming down. For the first few days, the entire province was shut down, and although slowly things are being switched back on, sadly, the internet is not one of them. International phone lines have also yet to be returned.
Rumor around town is that this current phone and internet blackout could last anywhere from 3 more days to three more months (Oct. holiday). Until this black hole that we are living in returns to life, this blog will be taking a short break. I see no other solution. I am also unable to check my email, so please forgive me if I haven't replied to you. Things have calmed, but life in Xinjiang is definitely changing.
I hope that by the time that everything is reopened, the stories that I would like to tell will still be relevant. Until then, be safe, and don't forget us.
Attention: Due to the riots on July 5th, 2009, all internet has been cut within Xinjiang. This means that all current posts have been scheduled and I cannot respond to comments. Thanks for your understanding.

One of our friends was traveling in Urumqi during all the mess (he planned the trip months before, just had coincidental timing). I finally got an e-mail from him today in Hong Kong on his way out of the country, saying they were in the trouble areas but were fine all along, they they had no e-mail access. That would stink so bad if you guys were blacked out until Oct. 1. Here's hoping!

We were wondering about you! All our Xinjiang contacts and blogs have been quiet. Take care.

I've been reading your blog for a few weeks now, and just wanted to let you know that you've done a great job. Your posts offer an insightful and humorous glimpse into the history and culture of Xinjiang. I really enjoy it. Good luck in the up-coming months!

Hang on in there - time to get on that bike and go explore that wild desert!

Have been thinking about you and hoping you are safe. I trust that the stories will be relevant whenever you finally have access and are able to post them.

Glad he got out ok! Not having internet is stinking pretty bad, but we're surviving. Everybody out here is preparing for the worst - which is October 1st...and possibly longer.

Thanks Alec! I appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks so much for leaving a comment and I'm sorry for the late reply! Having no internet is making things difficult. Hope you continue to enjoy what I've been writing.

I agree with that! A bit of camping is on the menu for next week :)

Ha! You should know that if I told you that I'd have to kill you. :) It's been VERY difficult, though.
But unfortunately no, there wasn't any wifi on the sleeper to Beijing.

I appreciate it! Thankfully it's only me and my wife. If I had kids here I think I'd be going crazy right now.
Thanks. I'll be posting these "hopefully relevant" stories this next week.

Your stories will most definitely still be relevant and we're looking forward to them. Stay safe!
