Skiing!….kind of

So it hasn’t snowed in our part of China for about 1 1/2 months and in fact the weather is warming to the point that most of the snow is beginning to melt. Sounds like a perfect time to go skiing, right? Well believe it or not, it was perfect! Granted it was more skiing on ice than snow but it was still tons of fun.

Now I know what some of you might be thinking right now – don’t you live in a desert? How can you ski in a desert? Well, it is true that we are situated in a pretty arid part of the Xinjiang desert but fortunately we are surrounded by small hills which provide good hiking in the spring months and in the winter some not-so-bad skiing! So whichever picture of Colorado that popped in your head when we said “ski” – get it out. Think bunny slopes. Well actually, think bunny slope. Just one. BUT for a measly $5 we were able to “ski” that bunny slope for 2 hours including gear rental. Not too bad, huh? We went with 6 other friends and had a blast. Here’s a couple of highlights:

**We fit 6 people in a car the size of a mini-Cooper. It looked (and felt!) like one of those clown cars!**

**The ski “lift” was actually a small frisbee-like disc that you put between your legs and it pulled you up the hill. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it sure made us glad that Colorado has chairs!**

**While Tiffany stayed on her feet the whole time, Josh did bite it hard once (on the bunny slopes no less!) injuring his thumb in the process. Please address all sympathy cards to “Josh the Pansy”.**
