Thanks, Jeff! I attending quite a few weddings during my time in Xinjiang and none of them were exactly alike. There's always something unique and I'm sure that Sichuan and Guangdong were the same.

And yes...that outfit is definitely something special. I wouldn't be caught dead in it!

Thanks, Josh. I really enjoyed your stories and photos. I haven't visited Xinjiang, most of the traditions you described are pretty much like the weddings I have been to in Sichuan and Guangdong province...except that the Best Man did not end up face first on the floor.

(I've never seen anyone wearing purple and green like that either...I did actually think the color was off on your camera at first!)

Glad you enjoyed! I will say this, though - if there's one thing I learned while traveling China it's to expect each part of the country to do it differently.

I'm not sure why all the dress changes nor do I know if the same will occur on Shanghai. I do know that as a guy there are many more crazy things that you'll have to do before the actual ceremony that I wasn't able to include in this article. Good luck :)

Finally, as far as baby showers go, I've never seen one as we would think of it. Most often I see what they call the "100 days party" to celebrate a child when they get that old. Maybe it's different in Shanghai so let me know!!

Thanks for your comment and best wishes on your marriage!

Thanks for the great overview. It's interesting to see the differences in wedding cultures and hopefully gives me an idea of what I'm signing up for with my gf. So anything you learn about the baby showerS? Also why the various wedding dress changes? Do these vary in shanghai?
